The Metacognitive Matrix (4×4 grid) maps the interdomain interactions, where every cell represents a meeting point for energy flow or load—for example, Sensorimotor-Affective (S-A: physical sensation acquiring emotional value), Cognitive-Conative (C-E: plans turned into action), or Affective-Conative (A-E: emotions fueling or draining motivation).
- Energy in this context refers to the capacity (psychological and physiological) mobilized for action, emotion, thought, and will:
- Physical and neurological energy (muscle activity, neural activation, heart rate).
- Emotional or affective energy (mood states, emotional arousal).
- Cognitive energy (attention control, mental effort, focus).
- Conative energy (engagement, resolve, self-regulation, spiritual drive).
- Energy can be variable and is influenced by internal states (fatigue, mood), external circumstances (stress, novelty, social context), and domain overrides (when one domain’s energy floods or suppresses others, as in panic attacks or tunnel-vision focus).
- Load refers to the demands placed on each domain, best articulated in original and complementary terms of “cognitive load” and “conative load”:
- Cognitive Load: Mental effort needed for processing, working memory tasks, and attention-demanding activities (Sweller et al., 2019).
- Conative Load: Motivational and volitional effort needed to sustain goal-directed activity, resist distractions, and persist under frustration (Baumeister et al., 2007; Sharrock, 2017).
